"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has." --Margaret Mead

KHS Spay/Neuter Initiative

In early 2007, the Kentucky Humane Society will take its spay neuter initiatives to the next level. The KHS low-cost spay-neuter clinic, currently offered one day a week, will be expanded to five days a week at a new, separate location dedicated entirely to spay-neuter efforts. The time has come to hear the facts about KHS’s plans and learn how we can join efforts to end pet homelessness in our region.

All rescues, shelters and animal welfare organizations within a 75-mile radius of Louisville were invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, November 8th at 4pm. The meeting was led by an expert in regional high volume spay neuter, Dr. Karla Brestle. Karla is the Medical Director at the nationally renowned Humane Alliance. (More information on Humane Alliance and their success below.) For more information, contact lwallace@kyhumane.org or 502-515-3130.

KHS is fortunate to have been selected by Humane Alliance to participate in its mentor program and benefit from all they have learned, including their best practices and highly refined surgical techniques.

· Humane Alliance has been open for 12 years and is now training others around the country to replicate its successful model.

· Humane Alliance has completed over 130,000 surgeries – 21,000 surgeries in 2005 alone – with a mortality rate of just .008% (or 17 out of 21,000 animals).

· Animals are transported to and from the Humane Alliance clinic from a service area that encompasses a 100-mile radius of Asheville.

As a result of these efforts, the euthanasia rate in the counties served by Humane Alliance has been reduced by nearly 70%!
